Modeling: art, sport, hobbies

Modeling is aimed at all ages, whether they are beginners or advanced. The 'prerequisite' is to have enough patience and… artistic concerns!

Modeling exercises the mind and cultivates creative thinking, directing the modeler to maintain a logical order in assembly. In addition, it offers invaluable historical insights through the collection of elements and pieces from various eras. However, an elementary skill in assembly, gluing and painting is required. Due to the lack of leisure time, interest has now shifted to remote modeling. The fights that are taking place offer a lot of excitement to the enthusiastic audience.

Until the early 1950s wood was the most common material used for construction. The first models were made of polystyrene plastic, without much detail. Modern industry with mass production has greatly contributed to the spread of modeling.
Assembly kits are also marketed for all assembled models, also known as "kits". These contain all the necessary parts for making models, stickers, colors and, of course, brochures with detailed instructions for the convenience of the users.

Today's models are divided into some basic thematic categories. There are models of ships (passenger and warships), cars (private and military), trucks, motorcycles, cannons, weapons (rifles and pistols), airplanes (civilian and military), rockets, spaceships, trains as well as houses, drones (drones) from history or modern times), human figures and animals (eg assembled wooden dinosaur skeletons).

The increasing variety of modeling themes has led to the creation of a 'benchmark' between constructions. Thus, the so-called "scale" was adopted which, as we know from the geographical maps, indicates the relation of representation to reality. Therefore, when, for example, we read "1/72" in a kit or under a model's photo, it means that the model is 72 times smaller than its model.

The most popular scales, always based on sales, are: 1/72 for airplanes, 1/24 for cars and trucks, 1/9 for motorcycles, 1/72 for military vehicles, 1/1700 for ships. and for figures 1/72. In the case of rail models, the ratio refers to the width of the rails, that is, the distance from one wheel to the other. The scale is indicated by the letters 'I', 'HO' and 'N' or the number '0' and indicates the distance of 45mm, 16mm, 9mm and 32mm rails respectively.

If one wishes the models of his collection to be united, possibly historical, and to be uniform and comparable to one another, it is advisable to choose from the outset which scale is most advantageous in terms of space available, detail, convenience, and a variety of themes in the collection. trade.

The categories to which vehicles belong include two basic types of modeling: static and dynamic. Static modeling includes non-moving constructions, based mainly on the perfect representation of the corresponding real vehicles. It is also called "plastic modeling" because in the majority of models are made of plastic.

Dynamic or remote-controlled modeling focuses on how to move and direct the model, but this often comes at the expense of correct and realistic representation of the model. These constructions can be driven remotely with a special remote control device. The remote control system consists of a radio transmitter that transmits radio waves and a receiver in the model, receives the waves and converts them into mechanical motion.

Remote control cars, which are the most popular among the dynamic models, in turn include various subcategories.

Depending on the mode of movement, they are classified as electrical or thermal (ie with fuel), based on the terrain for which they are intended for earth or asphalt (piste) and on a scale in categories 1/5, 1/8, 1/10, 1/12 and the least common 1/18.

Dynamic rail models are considered a special case, as they require, of course, the construction of a rail train running on lines. This need led to the emergence of a very important element of modeling, the model. We are not referring, of course, to the baby trains set up on the table. There are models that are remarkable constructions and touch the boundaries of art (eg tens of meters of railways, intersections, branches, crosswalks, sound and light signaling, rotating platforms, cranes, etc.).On such "pieces of the world", which often extend to many square meters, trains run and maneuver. To sum up, the unit is electrically operated and operated by dedicated electrical panels.

Static models are more accessible and widespread, because they hide less difficulty and cost less (starting from 3 to 5 euros in some kits). On the other hand, dynamic models are not suitable for beginners, both because they are more demanding in manufacturing and because buying even the cheapest remote control (along with all the necessary remote control systems, fuels, accessories, etc.) costs several hundred euros.

Indicatively, the price of a simple petrol car starts at 300 euros, while an airplane can start at 185 euros and can go very high (especially in jet planes). The types of dynamic models have now reached a high degree of perfection and they perform, almost flawlessly, many difficult movements.

Modeling nowadays is most prevalent in the United States, Europe, and Japan, where there is a good number of clubs or groups where modelers exchange information and "secrets", organize events, exhibitions and competitions. The races are about dynamic models and are regulated by national and international regulations.

Greece has several modeling clubs, each of which specializes in separate areas: plastic remote control aircraft, ship models, cars, etc.

Several aeronautical and aerial sports clubs have modeling departments, recognized by the General Secretariat of Sports as sports clubs. Similar mobilization can be found in remote-controlled car models.

Today, a 1/8 scale piste model weighs 2 kg and develops a speed of 130km / h in 1-2 seconds! Therefore, the safety of drivers and spectators is now a prime factor and for this reason the races are organized on organized rides and not in alpens or parking lots as before. The purpose of these competitions is to showcase talent. To avoid competition at the technology level, everybody competes with similar cars.
